Students with learning disabilities may not learn the same way that other students do. They may need additional help and attention to help them fully grasp a concept or learn at a steady pace. Fortunately, we at Academic Associates Learning Center can offer the support and information you need to help students succeed in school. Here are three effective learning techniques to help those with learning disabilities.
- Offer different strategies for increased comprehension: Effective learning techniques can be as simple as changing the approach. It can be effective to have the child summarize the passage or instructions, read aloud or have it read aloud, use mnemonics, or create concept maps or notes to reflect on what they’re learning.
- Engage the senses: If a child struggles to grasp abstract topics, an effective learning technique could be to turn it into something more concrete by engaging the senses. The individual might thrive with visual demonstrations, rhythm and music to remember pronunciations or key concepts, or objects they can touch to count or read along.
- Take regular breaks: If your child struggles to remain focused, you might consider regular breaks that allow them to take a break from learning just long enough to renew their engagement with the concept and learning.
The effectiveness of these learning techniques may vary from child to child. We always adjust our techniques and support based on the child’s needs. Please give us a call if you would like to learn more about other effective learning techniques.
