Children all learn to read at different rates, but with how important reading is to everyday life, you’ll want to prioritize finding a reading assistance program for your child if they show any indication that they’re struggling with this important skill. Here are three of the top signs that your child may need a reading assistance program.

- They memorize more than they sound out. Many children who struggle with reading turn to memorization. However, memorizing words isn’t the same as learning to read. Phonetic learning, which involves learning what sounds are associated with each letter, helps a child learn to sound out words so they can learn how to read unfamiliar words. Relying on memorization without learning how to sound words out will limit your child’s ability to read later.
- They have a hard time remembering what they read. It’s normal for children to have more trouble remembering what they read compared to adults. However, if your child is consistently unable to recall key story details or summarize what they’ve read, there may be a larger concern that should be addressed with a reading assistance program.
- They read very slowly. Children are going to read slower than the average adult, but if your child reads very slowly and struggles with words they saw in a previous sentence or paragraph, you should consider some outside help. Not only does this issue mean phonetic skills could be lacking, but it also can affect your child’s reading comprehension ability.
