Early literacy skills are a set of skills that help your child be a successful reader and communicator. Starting early and teaching your child the necessary literacy skills can help them succeed in both their academic career and in life. If you feel that your child could be doing better in terms of literacy, there are many ways to help them improve.

How to Improve Your Child’s Early Literacy Skills

Here are three ways you can help improve your child’s early literacy skills.

  1. Age-appropriate playing: It may be surprising, but playing is a great way to teach early literacy skills. Pretend play with toys, blocks, or friends can often involve storytelling and increase your child’s understanding of narrative structure and elements, improved vocabulary and sentence structure, and improved communication skills. You can also further this development of their literacy skills by playing with alphabet blocks and magnets for better letter recognition.
  2. Talking and singing with your child: You can encourage better early literacy skills by simply engaging with your child. Talk to them normally, read to them, and sing to them. This can help your child recognize speech patterns and sentence structure. It can also foster a love for reading. Additionally, singing can help them understand and recognize the sounds of words and rhyming.
  3. Additional help when necessary: Some children may struggle with early literacy skills for any number of reasons, and that’s okay. We at Academic Associates Learning Center can provide them with the support and one-on-one instruction they need through beneficial educational programs to help them gain those skills.
