Reading comprehension is how well one can engage with and understand the meaning of a text. This reading skill can be a difficulty for any age, but there are ways you can work with your child to improve it.
Here are a few tips you might try with your child to improve their reading comprehension:
- Give them a quiet reading environment: One key factor that can affect reading comprehension is a lack of focus. If your reader is in a noisy and exciting environment, they might be easily distracted and find it hard to focus on the text they’re reading. You can help them with this by providing a quiet and calm environment free from devices and other distractions to encourage better focus.
- Encourage engagement with the text: Engaging with the text is another key part of reading comprehension. You can encourage your reader to engage with the text by suggesting they look up unfamiliar words for better understanding or by asking them questions that require inferences. You could also ask them questions to help them better visualize scenes or characters.
- Find texts they enjoy: It will be easier to improve reading comprehension when you give your reader texts they enjoy reading. Help them find something they can connect with through similar interests and passions. This will help them stay motivated as they read and encourage them to try harder with their comprehension.
- Enroll in a learning program: There are many ways to work on your child’s reading comprehension at home, but we at Academic Associates Learning Center are here to give your reader the boost they need to jumpstart their reading comprehension skills. We can give them one-on-one instruction to give them the attention they need with personalized teaching and better chances of success.
